RUMC Foundation Fund Choices

by Gary Witschy, Executive Director, The RUMC Foundation, Inc.

The RUMC Foundation, Inc. provides the opportunity for members and friends to perpetuate the ministries and missions of the Roswell United Methodist Church. Gifts can be made through wills, trusts, insurance plans, and retirement plans as well as through donations of personal property, real estate, appreciated assets, and cash.  Fifteen existing endowment funds and a general fund are available to receive your contributions for the following purposes:

  • Youth Ministry

Multiple funds have been established to provide youth scholarships for retreats, mission trips, confirmation retreats, and educational opportunities and to support other youth ministry and mission activities.

  • Children’s Ministry

One fund was endowed to support children’s ministry programs.

  • World and Local Missions

The total or partial returns of four funds are used to pay for local and world missions projects inclusive of travel, construction, and repair activities for work groups and materials and other requirements for outreach programs.

§         Music Ministry and Help Fund

A fund was endowed for distributions to be made annually to the RUMC Music Ministry and the RUMC Help Fund and a more recent fund was established specifically for distributions to RUMC music programs.

  • Scholarship Fund

The Foundation's newest endowment fund was established to support higher education.  Each year proceeds from this fund will be used to grant a scholarship to a deserving RUMC student member at a United Methodist affiliated college, university or seminary.

  • Facilities Fund

An endowed fund was created to provide annual distributions of earnings for RUMC facilities maintenance and/or enhancements.  Another fund was established more recently for this same purpose and to contribute to the coverage of annual RUMC Foundation operating expenses.

  • General Purpose Needs

The earnings of two funds are designated for the general-purpose needs of the church.

  • General Fund

The general non-endowment fund includes designated and non-designated gifts that are intended for special needs of the church whenever they arise.

Memorial gifts, a donation to honor a family member or a friend or a special contribution above the tithe level can be made to any of these funds. Opportunities also exist to establish new endowment funds for the specific distribution of earnings. In each case the mission of the RUMC Foundation is to assist in the fulfillment of personal goals for giving.

Providing a Perpetual Source of Support

by Gary Witschy, Executive Director, The RUMC Foundation, Inc.

Volatile consumer prices!  Higher health costs!  A "roller coaster" investment marketplace!  The “outgo” line in your personal budget may be increasing faster than the “income” line.  This may be impacting your ability to donate as much as you would like to give to charitable causes.  For instance, you may think that you cannot afford a gift to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. in addition to your other charitable giving.  This may be true during your lifetime but have you considered a contribution from your estate or a gift now that will provide income to you for as long as you live?

Gifts From an Estate

For many of us, the largest charitable gifts we can provide may be available when we die.  Assets will be liquidated. Properties will be sold. Life insurance policies will be redeemed.  It’s important that everyone has a will to insure that the distribution of these proceeds is handled as the individual desires.  The inclusion of the RUMC Foundation in a will can be done in various ways:

§        The estate can be tithed. Specifying 10% as the amount of a gift to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. from an estate can be done when the will is drafted or in an amendment to a will called a codicil.

§        A fixed amount, specific assets, or a percentage figure other than the 10% tithe level can be included in the will or codicil.

§        A current pledge or annual gift to the church can be endowed by including a specific gift in the will.  For example, if $4000 per year is currently given to RUMC, a gift of $80,000 in the will or estate plan to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. at a 5% annual investment return will endow the $4000 gift level perpetually.

§        A residuary bequest can be made to give all or a percentage of the remainder of an estate to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. after all other distributions are made.

§        A contingent bequest can be made to give a fixed amount, specific assets, a percentage or all of the estate to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. if primary and secondary beneficiaries do not survive the author of the will.

Gifts from an estate can be designated for a specific purpose(s) or undesignated with no restrictions on their use.  Gifts at or above $25,000 can be endowed with only the earnings from the Funds to be used for designated or undesignated purposes.

Wording for Charitable Bequests:

Assistance with the preparation of a will or codicil should be sought from an attorney and other advisors as appropriate.  The following provides sample wording for various intentions:

Tithing a Gift:

I give 10% of my estate to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. located in Roswell, Georgia.

Giving a Fixed Amount, Specific Asset, or Percentage Figure Other Than 10%

I give $_____ of, (the specific asset) in, or _____% of my estate to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. located in Roswell, Georgia.

Endowing an Annual Gift:

I give $_____ (the amount necessary to endow the annual gift) of my estate to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. located in Roswell, Georgia.

Making a Residuary Bequest:

I give all (or a percentage) of the remainder of my estate to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. located in Roswell, Georgia.

Making a Contingent Bequest:

In the event (primary/secondary beneficiaries) do not survive me, I give all (or a percentage) of my estate to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. located in Roswell, Georgia.

Gifts That Generate Income

§         A gift annuity can be obtained through The RUMC Foundation, Inc. that will provide fixed payments for life to the gift annuitant in an amount determined by the individual’s age and the amount of the charitable gift.  Income tax deductions are available in the year of the gift and future tax benefits may also apply.

§         Trusts can be established that will provide lifetime income to the individual and a gift to the RUMC Foundation at the death of the donor.  Trust content varies and a professional advisor should be contacted to provide information and to assist with establishing a trust.

There are many ways to give to The RUMC Foundation, Inc. both during your lifetime and in perpetuity.  For more information, please contact RUMC Foundation Executive Director Gary Witschy, gwitschy@rumc.com or 770.261.1736, to discuss your planned giving objectives.
